Organic Certification Program - Idaho Updated:08/2020

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture’s Organic Certification Program is an accredited certifying agent of the USDA’s National Organic Program. We provide certification services for crops, wild crops, livestock, and handlers/processors. We also provide material registration for manufacturers who produce inputs used in organic production.

ISDA has been serving the state’s organic community since 1990, when the Idaho legislatures passed the Organic Food Products Law ( Title 22, Chapter 11, Idaho Code). In 2002, ISDA became one of the nation’s first accredited certifying agencies. Today we certify around 200 operations. Friendly, knowledgeable, and local staff are here to help answer any questions regarding organic certification.

Looking to become certified organic?

The organic certification process includes five steps:

1. Complete and submit an Application, Organic System Plan(s), and application fee. Click on the scope(s) of certification you wish to pursue (crop, livestock, or handler/processor) to find the applicable forms.

2. The application materials are reviewed by ISDA.

3. An on-site inspection is conducted.

4. Inspection report and supporting documents are reviewed by ISDA.

5. Decision of certification is made.

Organic certification fees include: the application fee and the inspection fee. The application fee is based on annual gross organic sales. The inspection fee is based on the inspector’s time and travel at a rate of $35.00 per hour and $0.555 per mile. Please contact the ISDA for a customized fee estimate.

On average, operations receive their organic certificates within three months of applying.
