Carbon Cycle Institute (CCI) Updated:01/2015

The Carbon Cycle Institute’s mission is to stop and reverse global warming by advancing natural, science-based solutions that remove atmospheric carbon while promoting environmental stewardship, social equity and economic sustainability.

Projects & Partnerships

CCI develops working models and demonstration projects that are replicable, scalable and broadly applicable to addressing climate change, seeking solutions that promise environmental, economic and social equity benefits. Some CCI programs and projects are fully managed and operated by Carbon Cycle Institute staff, contractors and consultants. In other cases, CCI partners with government agencies, businesses or other nonprofit organizations to advance its mission. These partnerships may involve shared program management as well as nonexclusive licensing and right-of-use agreements.

Current CCI projects and programs include Agricultural CarbonCarbon Cycle LiteracyThermopile Project and DNA Everywhere. Our strategic partners include Fibershed and the Marin Carbon Project.

Guiding Principles

CCI works to identify and advance carbon cycle solutions that satisfy five core principles:

  • Reducing or avoiding new GHG/carbon emissions is not enough to address our climate crisis; we need solutions that reduce the “legacy load” of carbon in the atmosphere;
  • Carbon management solutions should focus on restoring natural resources and processes;
  • Solutions must be grounded in rigorous science;
  • To be scalable, solutions must have a clear path to an enabling policy environment and appropriate economic incentives; and
  • Effective and lasting solutions to global climate change must embrace the “three Es” – Environment, Economy, and Equity.
