What is the Idaho Beef Council?

The Idaho Beef Council (IBC) is a state agency which operates with a single objective: to increase the consumer demand for beef.

Created in 1967 by the Idaho legislature as a marketing organization to support Idaho’s $1.4 billion beef industry, IBC is funded by the beef checkoff program  -  a $1.50 per head assessment on the sale of cattle in Idaho.  The funds generated from this are used to increase consumer beef demand through programs of promotion, research and education to influence beef sales both at home and abroad.

An eight-member board of directors guides the Idaho Beef Council. The Board is comprised of representatives from each of the state's industry sectors: Cow/Calf Producers, Dairy Farmers, Cattle Feeders, and Livestock Markets. IBC board members are nominated by their respective organizations and appointed by the Governor for a three year term.

The mission of the Idaho Beef Council is "To build consumer demand for beef in the global marketplace through support of integrated local, state, national and international programs thereby enhancing the opportunity for Idaho producer profitability through checkoff investment."

To carry out its mission, the Idaho Beef Council will consider funding projects conducted by outside organizations if the project falls within state and federal guidelines for beef checkoff funding, and helps achieve the goals and objectives set out in the Idaho Beef Council Market Plan.

Proposals must be submitted on the IBC Funding Request Form and will be considered by Idaho Beef Council using the following procedures:

  • Proposals must be submitted by April 27th in order to be included for consideration at our annual fiscal year budget planning. The IBC budget meeting is held in late May or early June.
  • The IBC fiscal year runs July 1st through June 30th.
  • Organizations will be notified in June as to if their funding was approved or not.
  • Funding proposals may be accepted at other times during the year at the IBC board's discretion.
